Rameswaram in the Ramanathapuram district of Tamil Nadu is located on Pamban Island separated from mainland India by the Pamban channel. Together with Varanasi, it is considered to be one of the holiest places in India to Hindus. It is situated in the Gulf of Mannar, at the very tip of the Indian peninsula and is connected to mainland India by the Pamban Bridge. According to legend, this is the place from where the Hindu god Rama built a bridge, across the sea to Lanka to rescue his wife Sita from Ravana. The ancient Chidambaram Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva in form of the cosmic Dancer with one of the five dancing halls of Nataraja. The name Mamallapuram is named after the Pallava king Narasimhavarman I, who took on the epithet Maha-malla (great wrestler), as the favourite sport of the Pallavas was wrestling. It has various historic monuments built largely between the 7th and the 9th centuries. It has been classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Among the major Hindu temples, some are the most prominent Vishnu Temples and Shiva Temples of Tamil Nadu like the Varadharaja Perumal Temple for Vishnu. The city is also famous for its hand woven silk sarees.
